“What a great CD, I’ve played it over several times now… The Fir Tree is a great piece, and I’m sure will be very popular. Congratulations to everyone concerned…and bravo on…The Christmas Song.”
-Roger Argente, Bass Trombone – Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London and Bass Trombone and Founder – Superbrass, London
Our debut album, Brass Tidings, is available online from CDBaby, iTunes, Amazon, and the Google Play Store.
Included are some well-known holiday favorites, such as Mel Torme’s The Christmas Song and a rousing version of Handel’s Joy to the World, to some lesser-known works such as Schiassi’sWeinacht’s Pastorale. The centerpiece of this recording is Joseph Turrin’s The Fir Tree, with text by Gloria Nissenson.
The Fir Tree is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1845 fairy tale of the same name. It is scored for double brass quintet, percussion, narrator, and vocal soprano. The music is beautifully scored and compliments the text with unusual grace and delicacy. The Fir Tree is a gem that belongs in your annual holiday listening library, and we are proud to be the first group to record it!
